I was raised in Philadelphia, PA. in a blue collar neighborhood. I studied for the priesthood with the Society of the Divine Word for five years. I later attended Temple University where I obtained a BA in Communications and Theater. I was a benedictine monk for a year at Weston Priory, VT.
After being granted an M.Div. by the Liberal Catholic Church International, I was ordained in 1989. I was consecrated a Bishop in 1996 through the Mar Thoma and Old Catholic lines. My ministry in chaplaincy includes intensive and extensive training in various specialized settings: brain injury, transplant, medical, mental health, pediatrics, ER ministry, among others. My ministerial focus is palliative care and ministry to veterans.
I have two years of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE, 7 advanced units) and 2 years of Supervisory CPE with the VA. One year in Palo, CA where I was awarded a Palliative Care Interdisciplinary Fellowship. I played an important role in developing a CPE program at Palo Alto in addition to my hospice ministry. Another year, I was assigned to the VA in Sacramento to lay the foundations for a pastoral care department and CPE program. Both sites were credentialed by ACPE (Association for Clinical Pastoral Education).
Presently, I am a chaplain for Maitre Hospice and Respite Care.
I am certified as a Pastoral Psychotherapist from Blanton-Peale Gradutate Institute (BP) with a concentration in family and couples work. I completed Level I & II Gottman Couples Workshops and am a couples coach. I was awarded a Teaching Fellowship following my graduation from BP. The fellowship allowed me to teach classes in the psychotherapies and supervise lower level students in their work with clients. I also taught in the Pastoral Care Studies Program for two years (CPE credentialed site) while at Blaton-Peale.
I had a therapy practice in New York for 15 years, where I also conducted workshops on spirituality, leadership and couples communication. I led a small Eucharistic community in New York as well.
During the initial years of the AIDS epidemic, I worked with Gay Men's Health Crisis in New York and the AIDS Chaplaincy in San Diego, where I was acting Director for a year.
I am a certified coach by the College of Executive Coaching, a post graduate program where I specialized in emotional intelligence, leadership development and appreciative inquiry.
My passion for pastoral care, education and development is clear from the above history. I hope to put these skills to good use as we develop relationships throughout our Diocese Without Borders.
If you want to join our diocese with no canonical strings attached, need a pastoral consultation, endorsement, episcopal protection or simply want to be part of a learning, interactive pastoral community, please contact me via email.
